Black Mother of Pearl

Black mother of pearl, also referred to as black nacre, is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by the black-lipped oyster, Pinctada margaritifera. This oyster is found predominantly in the warm, tropical waters of French Polynesia, especially around Tahiti, known for its pristine lagoons and vibrant coral reefs

It is prized for its dark, iridescent beauty, displaying a range of colors from deep blacks to shimmering greens, violets, and blues, particularly around the shell’s lip. This iridescence is caused by the diffraction of light through microscopic aragonite platelets, making it a visually stunning choice for jewelry.

  • Origin: Black mother of pearl comes from the black-lipped oyster, Pinctada Margaritifera, cultured in the lagoons of Tahitian and Cook Island atolls, with about 90% originating from Tahiti.
  • Characteristics: It has a black/grey background with pearlescence over the entire surface and violet to green iridescence, especially around the lip, making it rarer and more valuable than white mother of pearl.
  • Uses in Jewellery: Highly prized for fine jewellery, it’s used in pendants, earrings, rings, and bracelets, often set in metals like silver or gold, due to its durability and moisture resistance.
  • Cultural Significance: In Polynesian culture, it’s a symbol of wealth and status, with legends like the god Oro offering pearls to royalty.
